Dear Helen, Bill and I send our sincere sympathy to you and your family at this time of losing Bill. The obituary of his life was interesting because we didn't know of some of his experiences and accomplishments. The mystery of life after the one we know causes a lot of contemplation, wondering about a reunion somewhere with loved ones who went before us. So sorry and saddened upon hearing of Bill's passing on Wednesday. His life was an example for all of us, how our lives should be lived, up beat , always positive, always a smile and that twinkle in his eyes made you feel special. Story shared: Doing the Job Right

Bill was a stickler for doing a job right. One time a number of us were installing equipment in the Denver Central Office. One technician, who will remain nameless, connected a large cable backward. We could have disconnected it, spliced the wires that were too short, and connected it correctly. That didn’t satisfy Bill. He had us completely remove the cable, run in a new one and connect it correctly. That was the right way to do it and Bill would not settle for anything less.

Story shared: The New (reversable) Drill

Another time Bill assigned three of us to install some equipment in the Lititz Central Office. The installation required drilling several holes in pieces of steel angle. Bill gave us a new drill for the job. Usually that was an easy task, but this time we couldn’t get the drill bit to do much more than scratch the surface of the metal. After working at this for a couple of days, Bill came to Lititz to see what was wrong. We showed him the drill and the metal we were trying to put the holes in. He started the drill, took one look at it and shut it off in disgust. We were running the drill in reverse!

Story shared: Walking on Water

As noted in Bill’s obituary, he was a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. One day he came to work with a number of pieces of heavy Styrofoam. He was just finishing a water safety class and wanted to show the class members that he could walk on water. His attempt didn’t work.

Dear Helen, I am saddened to hear of Bill’s passing. I worked for and with Bill from the mid-1960s until his retirement. He was an inspiration and an example for me. He taught me the telephone craft and a lot about life. I have many fond memories of working with Bill and the guys in the Central Office Department. I see this website has a place to share stories. Dear Helen, I received a phone call from Chris, telling me of Bill's death. I am so very, very sorry! You and Bill surely go in my book of life. Bill really did always answer 'terrific!!!' when asked how he was doing. I always left your home with a few good stories and a smile on my face. "Royer" always did his best to bounce back from every health 'speed bump' until, I imagine, God decided heaven needed wonderful telephone man to supervise communication in heaven. Dear Bobbie, I was saddened to hear of the passing of your dad. From what I read it seems he had a wonderful life and was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. My parents are both living in Ephrata Manor, in their late 80's but my mom has severe dementia and doesn't really communicate much anymore.
